Holidays can present challenges for families when it comes to respecting boundaries and consent. Kids are often expected to look, behave, and interact in ways that are deemed acceptable by traditions, but can quickly contradict even the most consent-conscious homes.

🤔 How can parents ensure the consent lessons and teachable moments continue year-round? Try these out this season:

🗣 Before a holiday event, talk with your child about what’s ahead and how they feel about it. No one should feel forced, coerced, or ill-prepared when participating in holidays.

👋🏾 Talk about options for greeting others- waves, smiles, or a simple hello that don't involve touch. Or a high five, fist bump, tapping elbows, or a handshake. Make it clear to everyone that your child sets their body boundaries that other people should respect. Likewise, prepare kids to receive others' boundaries.

📸 Ask before taking or sharing photos. If a child is knowingly able to pose for a pic, they're aware of what is going on and should be given the opportunity to willingly participate, or not, as well as be aware if photos are being shared with others.

👀 Pay attention to, and respect non-verbal cues an infant or child may send while in the company of others. Step in if their comfort or boundaries seem compromised at any point.

🍽 Let them graze and find pleasure in their food experiences. Allow them the space to communicate their wants and limits without the use of force, coercion, or conflict.

🧣 Allow them to choose their clothing or involve them in the process. Whether it’s a festive garment, accessory, or coat, talk about the available options and ideas you both have, so it isn’t a last minute stressor or unwanted surprise.

💭 After a holiday event, debrief. Discuss, “How did that go/feel for you?” or “What was your favorite, and least favorite, part?” Listen, affirm, and be available to follow-up on concerns.

Respecting a child’s autonomy should be a year-round practice. Honoring consent and body boundaries, keep holidays happy and safe.

The most important thing you can say to a survivor of sexual violence is 'I believe you'. Often people are nervous and afraid to say ‘the wrong thing’ because they don’t know enough about sexual violence but you don’t need to be an expert to help. If you are prepared to listen, the person will be able to guide you as to the help they need. One of the most important things you can do for your friend/ partner/family member is to listen to them and believe what they are telling you. You can find more information on supporting someone who has experienced sexual violence on our website http://www.galwayrcc.org/get-info/supportingsurvivors/ or by calling our helpline on 1800 355 355.

GRCC are really thankful for the support of our Business Community with our Christmas List Campaign.
